MYOFASCIAL
RELEASE
What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release is a whole-body, hands-on approach for the
evaluation and treatment of the human structure. Its focus is the fascial
system.
The fascia, or connective tissue, is one continuous sheet of tissue that
runs uninterrupted from head to foot, covering and interpenetrating
every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and cell of your body. Physical
trauma (accidents, falls, injuries.. etc.), repetitive strain, and poor
posture over time, can all cause inappropriate fascial strain. This strain
can then put an enormous amount of pressure on the pain sensitive
structures that the fascia surrounds (ie. muscles, nerves, joints), causing
many of the symptoms that you may be experiencing. Failure to
address this tissue specifically may be cause for incomplete or only
temporary relief from pain and other symptoms.
Myofascial Release generally consists of a series of manual techniques
that range from gentle stretches to pressure into specific areas of
restriction. The fascia is incredibly strong and resilient and thus slow
sustained pressures are key in this form of treatment, allowing the tissue
to slowly unwind and let go. This frees the underlying muscles, bones,
nerves blood vessels, and organs allowing the body to resume a more
effective and natural posture and improving the quantity and quality of
movement
.
A myofascial release therapist is a therapist or physician who is trained
to evaluate the fascia specifically and determine where this tissue may
be restricting your bodies’ normal functioning, then develop /
implement an effective treatment plan to address those restrictions.

Who Can Benefit?
As stated previously, fascia surrounds and penetrates every other
tissue / cell of your body. It can become restricted and bound down due
to trauma, infection, poor posture etc. Therefore anyone who seeks out
treatment for symptoms of trauma, infection, repetitive strain, among
other injuries can reasonably expect that the fascia is involved as well
the structures contained within it.
However, the obvious benefactor of this treatment would be one who
has been receiving appropriate care for their injury / condition only to
continually flare up, or perhaps progress to a point in their treatments
where they “hit a wall” as if something had been missed. Myofascial
release is a very effective treatment for inflammatory conditions
(tendonitis, bursitis…), post-MVA injuries, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue
syndrome, headaches, sports injuries (continually injuring the same
area), as well as many other conditions. Please consult your therapist
regarding your own specific case.
